The Windlass Battlecry! Grosse Messer is a thick-bladed and robust chopper that lives up to the German name of Grosse Messer as “Big Knife”. A favorite of late medieval and early Renaissance central Europe the Messer started as a humble bowie-like knife and evolved into larger and more elaborate forms until it finally found acceptance as a sword that would be seen at the side of knights and princes in Central Europe.

The blade is forged from resilient 1075 high carbon steel with a thick spine, a half-length fuller and a clipped point to give it improved ability for thrusting and puncturing. The blade is well-tempered at a low 50s HRc for edge resistance and durability The guard , nagel and pommel are of steel and both the blade and hilt components have a distinctive antiqued blued finish. The thick tang has grip scales of darkened wood which solidly affix the grip halves to the tang for a solid hilt construction.
