Introducing the Signature Series by Windlass! All-time favorites, reissued by Windlass Steelcrafts® with several upgrades! The Erbach has been improved over its classic original by giving the blade a better degree of distal taper to improve its balance and overall handling. The steel has been improved with a higher carbon content steel paired with quality tempering and a sharpened blade. Resilient steel was used for the guard and pommel and the grip of wood was bound in leather with a wet-wrap and cord overlay technique – when dried and the overwrap removed, it left a cord grip imprint on the leather which makes for a notably better handhold for the swordsman. A final, significant upgrade was switching out the older, soft leather sheath for a fine hard core scabbard of wood which is wrapped in leather and completed with a steel chape and locket.

The Schloss Erbach sword from Windlass is a replica of an excellent and well-preserved German bastard sword from c. 1480 – it is now a highlight of the Oakeshott Institute collection in Minneapolis, but it takes its name from having once resided in the armory at Schloss Erbach. In true late-medieval German style the hilt has some naturalistic gothic elements matched with a blade that is well suited to the cut and thrust alike. This was clearly a sword for a knight or a professional warrior and it is a treasure to modernity that the original was preserved in exemplary condition.

This is my first bastard sword/long sword and seems to be a good one to start with. Overall for the price the fit and finish is really good. Can’t be too picky for the sword being under $400. It comes pretty sharp, feels very light, and is really nimble with most of the weight in the hilt.

I bought this sword as my first foray into the world of swords. The reason I purchased this one in particular was the cross guard shape being flat without sharp edges and the pommel is scent stopper like shape. I can use it as more handle if I want. The sword is very comfortable to hold. Weight is very nice. One issue I had the minute I pulled it from the box was that the crossguard was loose. Cut two water bottles and it was very loose. That being said the overall craftsmanship is reasonable. The blade has a good clean shape and profile from hilt to point. No waves in the blade and it was very symmetrical. Stats said that the sword comes sharp. Not really. Be ready to sharpen it properly yourself. Is this sword worth the $379 dollars that it is selling for? I don’t believe so. $300 at most. I had to reprofile the edge of the entire sword because the bevels did not match from one side to the next and it wasn’t sharp. I had to peen over the pommel myself the first day I had this sword to tighten the cross guard properly. That being said I will be keeping it but only because these are issues that I am capable of fixing properly in short time. I can make this sword worth the money I spent on it. If I were to send it back I have a strong feeling the one I would receive in return would consist of very similar issues. I give this sword a 3 out of 5 because it is a very good looking sword. Very comfortable. Scabbard is decent. If my cross guard was not loose from the get go I would have given it 4 out of 5 stars. The sword is a good cutter even with the edge not being sharpened properly. I really do like this sword so the criticisms are based on facts not feelings.
