Like the Roman gladius, the pugio was originally a Spanish weapon. The Romans always knew a good weapon when they saw it, so soon after encountering the armies of the Iberian peninsula, the pugio was incorporated into the legionary's arsenal. Traditionally worn on the left hip, with the gladius on the right (reversed for officers) and secured directly to it's own belt or to the same one as the sword.

The Brass Beaded Roman Pugio features an unsharpened carbon steel blade with central ridge. The Brass grip is built over the blades full tang, riveted through the layers of brass, steel and wood. The included scabbard is made of brass with a leather lined interior.

  1. Thomas W.

Wonderful choice The Brass Beaded Roman Pugio is, quite simply, a beautiful piece. The pugio itself feels good in the hand and has an impressive heft. Mine has a small bit if discoloration along one back edge, but this is clearly from the brazing process and not the least bit offensive. I can’t imagine original pieces didn’t show similar marks from the assembly process. I am very pleased I made this selection.
