This Medieval Sallet is crafted from 18 gauge steel; the interior of the helmet is blackened and unlined. Included with the helmet is a separate padded cotton arming cap. A simpler sallet such as this example is typical of earlier designs - later versions would be embellished with hinged visors and plates of elongated and articulated lames for the neck. Though the sallet in various forms could be found throughout medieval Europe, it enjoyed greater popularity in Italy and Germany in particular. The design affords excellent overall protection for the head and the defense could be further upgraded by pairing it with a gorget designed to protect the neck and the lower half of the face.
