Overview

Medieval 15th Century Dagger - Deepeeka

This late Medieval Dagger is a robustly-constructed dagger with a tempered blade of high carbon steel with hollow ground blade geometry which reduces weight whilst retaining a strong spine in the central of the blade to retain durability. The blade tang is peened over the pommel to ensure a strong and well-constructed hilt assembly.

The guard and pommel are steel and the stout wooden grip is overlaid in the traditional medieval manner with finely-stitched leather which was treated with beeswax and shrunk for a tightened fit. The dagger is paired with a companion scabbard of wood which is overlaid in tight, form-fitting leather.

Cross guard is uneven, unfinished with chips and dark spots in it, there is a black burn mark under it where it was welded onto the blade. Had I known that I would have spent my money on something else. Blade is uneven, warped, twisted, and one edge is straight and one is profile tapered significantly towards the tip. Pommel is so heavy that it only carries upside down even from a frog. I have already experienced cracking in the tang where the weld and handle are. My afghan khukri was terribly misfigured and unfinished too. Do better KOA!

Came unsharpened. Construction is rugged -and this knife is heavy! Fit and finish are also rugged… there are minor visible flaws, but nothing you wouldn’t expect from a durable battle-ready weapon. The most obvious flaws on mine were the gaps between the guard and the blade, which don’t rattle or move but give the impression that the fitting was a little unprofessional. The overall impression is that this really could’ve been made by a true smith centuries ago, and it’s definitely NOT the cookie-cutter junk most companies make that look nice but don’t function. The shape of the blade makes it difficult to sharpen, but again not a deal breaker. The sheath, handle, and fittings are all nice. I’m thrilled to have a real traditionally made dagger with this sturdy construction.

I wasn’t expecting a whole lot when I ordered this dagger since it’s Deepeeka, but it was only 60 bucks so not a huge investment. I got 2 of them, both unsharpened, and from what I can tell they are essentially the same. However, one of them does have a handle that is bent, which I assume means the tang is bent as well. The blade isn’t perfectly straight either and just from my personal intuition it does feel a little heavy for a dagger. I know that’s a common thing among Deepeeka products so I’m not surprised there. I can’t complain too much since it was pretty cheap but still, flaws are flaws. Excluding the flaws though, I like the simple design of the dagger. This I would say is okay if you know what to expect from Deepeeka.
