Q&A
Questions from the community
Q What is the shield made of? Common Question
The face is built from stout wooden planks joined edge to edge, with a steel rim binding the perimeter for reinforcement. A steel cross is riveted across the face, and the reverse is backed in suede leather.
Q How is the shield carried? Common Question
The reverse has a leather arm band strap and a separate palm grip, both adjustable with brass buckles. The straps are arranged so the cross reads as an "X" when viewed from the front, and the arm goes through the upper strap while the hand grips the lower handle.
Q What size is this shield, and what is it suited for? Common Question
It measures 24'' in diameter and 1/2'' thick, a full-size round shield form used in medieval reenactment, display, and LARP contexts. At 6 lb 13 oz it carries comfortably on the arm for extended wear.
Q What does the metal cross and rim look like up close? Common Question
The cross-shaped strap and rim banding have a dark, hand-forged, slightly weathered surface, with the cross arms flaring into fleur-de-lis or trefoil shapes at the ends. Both are fastened to the wood with visible round rivets.
Q What does the back of the shield look like? Common Question
The interior is lined in dark suede, with four pointed metal corner caps spaced around the rim echoing the front's ironwork. Two black leather straps with punched holes and buckles cross the interior for the arm and hand grip.
Q How should I care for this shield? Common Question
Wipe the steel rim and cross with a light coat of oil to prevent rust, especially if stored anywhere humid. Keep the wood dry and away from direct sun or damp to avoid warping, and condition the suede backing and leather straps occasionally to keep them supple.
Q Is this shield built for stage combat or reenactment sparring? Common Question
It's built with a wood core, riveted steel cross and rim, and an adjustable arm strap and grip typical of reenactment display and living history use. The listing doesn't specify a combat or sparring rating, so check with your group's own equipment standards before using it in contact drills.
