Crusader's Pot Helm - 18 Gauge - Deepeeka
This Crusaders Pot Helm is constructed from riveted plates of 18 gauge steel; a brass cross is riveted onto the helm and the interior of the un-lined helm is blackened. A simple cotton arming cap is included.
Although associated most strongly with the early Latin knight of the Crusades, helms such as this were common throughout early medieval Europe. The all-encompassing protection for the head was essential for the charging cavalryman who relied on breaking the enemy in a massed headlong charge with his sword-brethren. The pot helm protected the face from oncoming missile fire and also shielded the face from shards of wood blasted from shattered enemy shields, split chainmail links and perhaps even flying splinters from his own lance. Additionally the side of the head is also well-protected from side-strikes, which are likely to occur in a melee between two cavalry forces.
