Landsknecht Emporium - Rotmilan Kriegsmesser with CC2 Pommel
The most fierce of late 15th / early 16th century swords, the Germanic Kriegsmesser cleaves and slices with fearsome ability and this reproduction from Landsknecht Emporium of Hungary ably reproduces this iconic sword and its cutting power in the Rotmilan Kriegsmesser. The long blade is crafted from well-tempered 6150 high carbon steel which was honed to a keen cutting edge. The thick spine of the blade gives it good rigidity and durability and the false edge is sharpened from about 10" from the tip. This thick spine gives the blade a wedge-shaped profile which lends its mass to powering into and separating a target cleanly and quickly and this effect is heightened at the main cutting portion of the blade where the spine thins considerably to flatten the blade to minimize drag and resistance as the blade passes through the target.
The guard and pommel are durably crafted from trusty steel and the hilt is constructed with two halves of polished oak hardwood which are riveted to a very thick blade tang. In addition to this, the blade tang is peened over the pommel and the blade shoulders are peened to the crossguard to minimize the chance of the guard shifting or loosening. The tough Nagel protrusion goes through the crossguard and is peened on the reverse to ensure it can take a hefty blow without breaking off. Altogether, this sword has a very tough hilt construction.

The Maker
Landsknecht Emporium
The Landsknecht was the archetypal mercenary of the late 15th and most of the 16th century, with their heyday being in the second quarter of the latter. They were pretty much the meanest & baddest soldiers around that time, with a heightened sense of fashion. Our goal is to create weapons a period Landsknecht would be proud to use, mostly on a budget that keeps it accessible to modern recruits.
Due to the continuous research we are doing, we sometimes stray from that time and location to better understand trends that led to the development of weapons we aim to recreate. We are progressing from simpler items towards the more complex ones. We started with making Messers in 2016 and it was our main focus in these past few years. We intend to cover most of the styles relevant to our interest, while we’re planning to expand our repertoire with Katzbalgers, Bidenhanders, various daggers and all kinds of awesome stabbiness in the foreseeable future.
We founded Landsknecht Emporium to this end in March of 2016 in the outskirts of rural Hungary, at the end of a dead-end dirt road in a house not unlike those of murderous hillbillies in the movies that we call home.
Often paired together
The sword is well made, very balanced for it’s notable weight, and comes quite sharp. With the slab wooden grip plates securely attached to the blade, edge alignment is easy to find, with the rest of the hilt very steadily constructed, including a narrow Nagel protecting the right side. Be advised: the sword comes without a scabbard, though Landsknecht Emporium will make a custom one for a (substantial) extra charge. I look forward to putting the blade through it’s paces cut testing.
This is a must-buy. Despite no scabbard to speak of, it’s likely not a Kriegsmesser you will be able to get forever. This is new, you will not find reviews on YT. I took a chance and am not disappointed – it feels PERFECT in my hands, as I focus on blending HEMA and Kenjutsu styles and techniques… the blade geometry lends itself to feeling like a 4:3 scale Katana, or 133% Katana size, in the length and width but not thickness departments. It therefore cuts incredibly easily – no effort required to align the edge and no effort to get some speed behind the swing. Don’t waste time and invest in this sword for your collection, as I promise you it performs in every regard while looking incredibly functional and classy.
