Overview
Albion Bayeux Sword
The Bayeux is named for the famous Tapestry depicting the Norman Conquest of England in 1066. Swords akin to the one on offer here from Albion are displayed on the Bayeux Tapestry. It has a broad flat blade of medium length with a fuller running the entire length and fading out an inch or so from the point. Though the point is narrow enough for thrusting, this is principally a cutting sword, designed for use against opponents in mail armour. This is a classic design for Norman or Early Crusader era sword, simple yet elegant and brutal.
The Bayeux has a hand-ground high carbon steel blade that is tempered for flexibility and edge retention. The crossguard and pommel are cast from mild steel. The grip is stabilized birch wood, cord-wrapped and fitted over with tight leather.

Something of an unsung hero in Albion’s lineup, the Bayeux is nimble but powerful, with an austere aesthetic that is iconic to the early Medieval period. It has a good deal of authority in the cut, while still being agile enough to deliver thrusts where you want, even if the tip isn’t particularly suited for thrusting against anything but soft targets. Overall, an extremely well-designed sword that deserves more attention.

The Albion Bayeux is absolutely amazing! I have many swords, but this is my first Albion. I have never held a sword that is so captivating. It’s difficult to put into words but the Bayeux has a special feel that is almost magical in a way with a simplistic beauty that is barely discernible from the photographs. It must be held to truly grasp the subtle aesthetics.
It feels much lighter in the hand than it actually is, and swings like a dream. The Bayeux allows for very manageable point control, making for accurate thrusts, but cutting is where it really shines. With a razor sharp edge right out of the box, pool noodles, water bottles and even tatami mats were little chalange, it slices through all with ease. I will add that I am not very good at cutting, especially tatami mats, but the Bayeux is very forgiving when it comes to edge alignment. It is without a doubt head and shoulders above the rest of my swords in the cutting department.
The fit and finish is stunning, far beyond any other sword in my collection. This brings me to the design itself, which is remanesent of a master craftsman’s magnum opus exhibiting the proficiency of geometric understanding in a simplistic and yet highly advanced mathmatical formula. One can’t help but wonder if there’s not some concealed meaning within the sword’s architecture.
The Albion Bayeux is certainly a hidden gem and it is worth every penny.
