Age of Craft - HMB Chalkis Brigandine Type 1 - 19 Gauge Tempered Spring Steel
Age of Crafts Chalkis Type 1 Brigandine is a set of robust torso armor built for rigorous HMB (Historical Medieval Battles) sport fighting. The internal plates that form the serious protection of this torso armor are crafted from tempered spring steel measuring 1 mm (19 gauge) in thickness. These plates are riveted to a backing of strong canvas and encased behind an outer shell of thick woolen fabric.
Easily donned like a jacket with its series of front-faced steel buckles and leather straps, this armor can also be tailored to size with its adjustable shoulder straps. This design allows the wearer to don and adjust this armor without the need for an assistant.
This armor is based on a preserved example found on the Greek island of Chalkis. A Venetian colony until its 1470 conquest by the Ottomans, a well-preserved example of brigandine armor was found on a castle on the island. Brigandine such as this was a popular form of protection for professional men-at-arms and soldiers as it provided excellent protection for its cost. Not merely for the non-noble classes, knights and noble combatants would often wear very fashionable examples of brigandine with fine cloth exteriors in vibrant colors.
