The updated version of the Korsoygaden Viking Sword has a blade featuring more distal taper to make it more responsive and more readily used and it also has an improved scabbard. A late Viking sword, the historical original this recreation is based on was dated to the beginning of the 12th century. The blade is tempered high carbon steel (C60 – similar to 1060) and has a hardness of 48-52 HRc. The guard and pommel are solid brass and its grip is wood with a tightly stitched wrap. The sword is paired with an improved wood-core scabbard which is wrapped in tight stitched leather and features a cord binding with a wooden suspension loop by which a sword belt can be knotted or slotted through for wear.

A note about blade thickness: The base of the blade is about 4.7 mm thick, the thinnest point at the termination of the fuller is about 3.1 mm thick and the raised mid ridge at the tip makes it about 3.8 mm thick at that midsection. (Measurements are approximate)

Scabbard: Super basic scabbard which is to be expected at this price point. Excellent retention on the sword, however the sword does not draw very smoothly or easily. I do have to put in just a bit of effort to draw the sword. I’m not entirely sure if its the scabbard’s fault or the blade’s fault. I think the scabbard is wrapped with fake leather? I don’t have many swords so I don’t have a great feel for the materials but at this price point I expect fake leather. No rattle when shook, only at the bottom which I think is normal.

Hilt: The grip is this kind of leather wrap which I feel like is cheap but it does give me a great grip on the sword. I can’t even turn it in my hands. The pommel and guard do have a rough finish and the quillons do have a couple hotspots at the ends but that isn’t really a big deal. The pommel isn’t perfectly centered, it skews to one side a little but it doesn’t really affect the handling too much. However, it is noticeable.

Blade: I noticed that the blade doesn’t appear to be perfectly in like with the guard or handle. And neither is the fuller. The fuller isn’t perfectly straight either. And the edge isn’t perfectly straight either! Hmmm, the lack of straightness seems to be a recurring issue at least for the sword I received. It’s hard for me to tell if this sword as ANY distal taper. If it does its minimal. But that is something I know Deepeeka is known for so its expected. The blade comes unsharpened so I paid for the KOA sharpening service and I think they did a good job with it. Sharp enough to cut bottles. The blade also came with these stains which kinda look like what you would see on your car windshield or something. Idk what it is but it does take the aesthetics down a small notch for me. Makes the blade look dirty. But this is cheap so I don’t care too much.

Handling: This is the part that surprised me a lot. Going into buying this sword, I knew that Deepeeka’s swords tended to be heavy and clunky especially because of the lack of distal taper. But this sword handles really nicely. It doesn’t feel heavy and is a lot of fun to swing around. Surprisingly though despite the non-straight edge it cuts bottles pretty cleanly. Even double cuts and thrusts felt pretty good. I think that’s more of a testament to KOA’s sharpening rather than Deepeeka’s edge geometry. The pommel also doesn’t interfere with my wrists too much since it slopes downward a bit, giving me a little more room to index the handle.

Verdict: I like this sword and I do not regret buying it. It did come with flaws but that is to be expected at this price point. Lot of fun to swing around and I would recommend this sword to anyone who wants a decent budget sword to beat up a little.
