Tod Cutler - 12th Century Quillon Dagger
The height of medieval 12th century self defense and fashion, a stately dagger such as this would have been a symbol of status by knights and nobles and copied, as capably as possible, by more regular men-at-arms. The long and rigid blade is a capable cut and thrust design with a diamond cross section that is a compromise between a height that gives the blade good rigidity, whilst being flat enough so as to not greatly impede cutting. The guard and pommel are fashioned from steel and the grip is carved and polished hardwood (Ash wood). The dagger is peened over the pommel for a tough overall construction.
The dagger is paired with a scabbard of high quality vegetable tanned leather in a stitched double layer construction which is completed with a brass cap and integrated leather lacing for wear.
12thC Medieval Quillon dagger - daggers started as knights daggers in the high medieval period and quickly became popular with regular soldiers and men at arms. This medieval dagger is an early version and was the height of fashion in the 12thC and features a stout double sided blade fitted to a simple steel guard and pommel with an Ash wood grip. Stylistically they are similar to swords of the period and this example is based on an English piece, but this style of dagger fits all over Northern Europe.

Often paired together
It’s a dainty but historically accurate dagger. The handle is small, with the pommel being part of the handhold. The leather sheath is buttery smooth. The blade will slide out slowly if tilted down. Cross section is thick and rigid. The blade on mine has a dramatic widening near the base, not all the way straight like in the pictures. The edge sharpening is apple seed grind, very sharp. Todd Cutler’s website offers a more historical accurate sharpening, but I heard it’s still somewhat blunt without honing by the customer.
Just received my dagger (sharpened) and I really love it. Was packaged very well box taped very securely, and was wrapped in layers of packing paper. I got the blue option and it is such a dark blue I almost thought it was black when I first opened the box and unwrapped it. Seems to be very well made, pommel and handle is peened in place and everything is lined up the way it should be. Blade sharpening made it acceptably sharp, not razor sharp. The only thing I dislike is how short the handle is (wood section not counting pommel). I have slightly smaller than average size hands (for a dude) and the wood is just long enough to be in the palm of my hand. The pommel keeps a positive grip though. After all is said and done I would purchase this again. Thank you KoA and Tod Cutler!
