Kingston Arms has revitalized the classic Hanwei Renaissance Side Sword, battle ready and forged from 5160 high carbon steel, this remake and reissue preserves its iconic agility of the classic model while introducing refined enhancements. With a 33-inch blade and a featherlight 2 lb 6 oz weight this sword which is balanced at a nimble 3.5-inch point of balance, delivers the swift cuts and precise thrusts favored by 16th- and 17th-century military and civilian swordsmen alike.
Now crafted at the Dragon King Forge in Dalian by Hanwei’s original artisans under Frenchie Jin, the retooled swept hilt and pommel boast crisp and clean lines reminiscent of early German originals. It is paired with a fortified grip design to prevent loosening during heavy use. The tempered 5160 steel blade ensures resilience and edge retention while the leather-wrapped 5.5-inch grip provide a secure and comfortable hold which is enhanced by the protective swept hilt. Often paired together
I’m favorably impressed. The blade is straight, stiff, no waves, nice brushed finish and clean, even fullering. The blade is mostly paper-cutting sharp. All the joints on the complex hilt are smooth and well-crafted. I like the less bulky design of this cross guard assembly compared to the town guard swords. The grip and pommel are well crafted.
I expected the finish on the cross guard and pommel to be more of a brushed steel finish but they have more of a stonewashed and patinated finish.
The one disappointment is that the smaller diamond-shaped hand guard/ring guard is a bit cock-eyed from the larger one. It looks fixable and at this price point I’m not going to knock a full star off the rating, maybe a half star. The POB is at the maker’s mark on the blade, about 3 in. from the ricasso and about 4.5 in. from the cross guard.
All in all, this is an attractive, well-made sword and a great value.

Arrived disassembled which was surprising. Not an issue as it gave me the option of deleting the leather on the ricasso with ease and using loctite on the threads of the tang if I wanted. This is a beautiful sword. Fit and finish are superior and mine came sharp as hell. The scabbard works and looks good enough. This is my second Kingston sword and I would not hesitate to purchase others.
