This striking Messer from Tod Cutler takes its inspiration from the vivid scenes of Pieter Brueghel’s paintings, where townsmen, soldiers, and travelers alike carry sturdy Messers or Bauernwehr at their sides. These weapons—part tool, part sidearm—were the trusted companions of the working classes in 15th and 16th century Germany and Switzerland, valued for their rugged practicality rather than noble ornament.

The Brueghel Messer embodies that same spirit of honest craftsmanship. Its over 14 inch blade is forged from tempered EN45 high carbon steel, producing a resilient and capable edge with a thick spine for strength and cutting efficiency. The steel guard and pommel cap frame a grip of carved hardwood scales that are riveted directly to the full tang for lasting security. The construction is completed with a traditional peen over the pommel cap, ensuring durability and historical authenticity.
