St. Hadrian’s Sword – 12th Century Sword – Deepeeka

This rather gorgeous example of a complete sword, scabbard and sword belt is a recreation that takes its informed stylization from the scabbard of the sword of St Hadrian; a rare surviving 13th century example of a medieval sword scabbard that survived the centuries intact enough to make its elegantly simple patterned motif plain to see. Whether on your wall, a sword rack or at your belt for reenactment or faire this sword is quite a visually impressive piece that nails the historical appearance and dimensions of originals.

The sword itself is hand forged and has a 31 inch blade of C60 high carbon steel which is tempered. An Oakeshott Type XI, it has the longer blade and narrow fuller typical of the classic knightly sword of the High Middle Ages which was built to deliver powerful blows from horseback or a hard-hitting sword on foot when paired with a shield. Weighing just over 2 lbs and with a point of balance at around 6 inches ahead of the guard, the sword does well in replicating the weight and balance of originals. Its guard and pommel are likewise of tough steel and the tang of the blade is peened over the brazil-nut pommel. The 4 inch grip of wood is wrapped in leather with risers beneath and given a cord-imprint finish in the traditional manner.

The sword scabbard is lavishly constructed as befits a sword taking its inspiration from the St. Hadrian scabbard; It is crafted from wood and tightly bound in high quality genuine vegetable-tanned stitched leather which is gorgeously embossed in a scrollwork floral motif to match the original. Its color is a fine English Ochre color which is very fitting for a traditionally-inspired medieval sword. It is finished with a traditional sword belt which is interlaced with the scabbard and a steel protective chape.
