Crafted under license from the Royal Armouries, this is the officially licensed reproduction of the famed Writhen Hilted Sword - a highlight of the museum's medieval collections. Included is a Certificate of Authenticity certifying that this is the officially licensed reproduction.
The Writhen Hilted Sword is a bold, unmistakably German Gothic hand-and-a-half sword. Forged around 1480 for a wealthy but anonymous patron, the sword belongs to a rare surviving group defined by the “Gothic Bough” motif—guards, pommels, and fittings wrought as twisting branches and living wood. Period art shows this organic, almost botanical style was a deliberate display of status, the work of a master bladesmith or cutler whose skill turned steel and copper alloy into something both beautiful and deadly. Far from being mere display pieces, these swords were practical, well-balanced, and thoroughly lethal weapons. Their form and decoration capture the refined yet dramatic aesthetic of the late medieval Holy Roman Empire and its principalities.
This reproduction is crafted by Deepeeka and the 34.5 inch blade is forged from C60 high-carbon steel (comparable to 1060) and tempered to 48–52 HRc. The intricately writhen guard, pommel, and grip ring are crafted in bright brass to evoke the original’s gilt copper-alloy fittings. The 5 inch wooden grip is painstakingly carved to resemble a bundle of interwoven branches and is long enough to accommodate either a single- or two-handed grip. The sword is surprisingly light on the scale at about 2 lbs 5 oz. It has a thick, diamond cross section blade with a thick, raised cross section that brings the balance of the sword out to about 6.75 inches.
A matching scabbard of excellent quality is included: a wood core wrapped in tightly stitched leather and finished with brass Gothic decorative bands and protective brass chape.
