This high-quality nylon messer from Red Dragon Armoury is an excellent choice if you’re looking for dependable training equipment or a sturdy weapon for medieval sparring.. Designed as a versatile training tool, it performs well for drilling and pell work much like a traditional wooden waster, while also being suitable for controlled sparring when proper protective equipment is used.
The blade is designed to flex in the final third toward the tip, allowing for safer thrusting without the overly soft or “whippy” feel often found in synthetic trainers. To increase durability, the blade-to-tang junction—commonly a weak point on plastic practice swords—is reinforced with a steel rod that runs the full length of the grip. This reinforcement also eliminates the handle flex often associated with polymer training weapons, resulting in a more rigid and realistic feel in the hand.
The guard is molded from durable nylon and features rounded, ball-shaped quillons intended to improve safety during sparring. Their larger rounded surfaces help reduce the likelihood of puncture injuries during contact.
The slide-on grip is made from a thermoplastic elastomer that closely replicates the feel of leather wrapped over wood. It provides excellent shock absorption while maintaining a firm, responsive grip without feeling soft or spongy. The pommel is also constructed from nylon, helping to balance the sword while making pommel strikes safer than those delivered with metal fittings. A brass nut molded inside the pommel creates a secure metal-to-metal connection with the tang.
For added convenience, the sword can be easily disassembled by simply unscrewing the pommel, making transportation and storage much easier.
These training swords weigh approximately two-thirds as much as a comparable steel weapon, intentionally reducing the force of impacts during sparring. Much of the weight is kept closer to the hilt, further minimizing strike force while maintaining good balance. The result is a trainer that feels solid and substantial—heavier and more realistic than most wooden wasters—while still prioritizing safety and durability.
