LK Chen – Ming Dynasty Flying Cloud ShuangSao Jian

This large and long bladed Ming Jian is remarkably agile and swift in the hand and it strikes with substantial velocity for lively and powerful cutting. It is an excellent sword for learning or experimenting with the documented techniques of the Ming Dynasty ShuangSao (Double Hand) Jian for your cutting session. Its hilt fittings and scabbard components are fashioned in a stylized and roiling flying cloud motif and like originals the wood scabbard is framed and reinforced in steel. An fine addition to an existing collection or an excellent cutting sword all on its own, the sword is full of Ming character and styling whilst losing nothing to utility and effectiveness.

The sharp edged blade is forged from GB 60Si2MnA high carbon manganese spring steel which is tempered to a 54-55 HRc; it has classic Jian geometry with a diamond geometric cross section and the blade has enough distal taper and profile taper so as to allow for effective piercing and thrusts. Stainless steel was used for the guard and pommel combining durablity with practical ease of maintenance and anti rust properties. The grip is particularly long and gives impressive leverage for a variety of grip styles and while the pommel shape is stylized it is also surprisingly easy to grip and function as an extension of the grip. The grip is wood with red-dyed genuine rayskin beneath a tight wrap of knotted cord. The scabbard is carved from fine Rosewood and polished smooth before being encased in reinforcing stainless steel fittings.

The Shuangshou Jian (雙手劍), or double-handed jian, represents a distinctive development of Chinese straight sword traditions during the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644). Longer than the more commonly encountered single-handed jian, the Shuangshou Jian was designed to be wielded with both hands, providing greater leverage, reach, and control in combat. Its use is particularly associated with the sophisticated martial culture of the late Ming period, when Chinese military writers and martial artists increasingly documented specialized weapons and fighting methods. The double-handed jian occupied a somewhat specialized role rather than replacing the standard single-handed sword, and was suited to powerful two-handed cuts and thrusts while retaining the precise point control for which the jian was renowned. Its development reflects the broader Ming fascination with refining and systematizing martial techniques, as seen in military treatises such as those of Qi Jiguang and Cheng Zongyou, which recorded an increasingly diverse range of battlefield and martial-arts weapons. Today, the Ming Shuangshou Jian is particularly valued for its unusual proportions and as an example of the experimentation and diversity that characterized Chinese swordsmanship during the Ming era.
