This robust Moro Barong short sword brings impressive chopping and slicing power with its wide leaf-shaped blade that can cut and hack in a Khukuri-like fashion due to its shape and its thick blade spine. Though a compact sword, it hits surprisingly hard and its wide leaf blade shape is capable of creating very wide punctures in a thrust as well. With a full tang construction the sword is able to handle heavy use and is an ideal sword for the backyard cutting enthusiast.
The approximately 15.5″ blade is forged from tough 5160 high carbon steel which has been tempered and sharpened. At less than 2 lbs in weight and with a 3.75″ point of balance the sword is able to be wielded with relative ease even though it has a thick blade built for impact and with the mass needed for powerful strikes. The hilt has a brass bolster and the grip is fashioned from two finely polished grip scales which are riveted directly to the thick blade tang. The matching scabbard is crafted from wood and is bound in leather and completed with a leather frog for wearing on a belt.
Traditionally used by the Muslim Filipino ethnolinguistic groups of the southern Philippines, particularly the Tausug, Sama-Bajau, and Yakan peoples of the Sulu Archipelago and Mindanao, the Moro Barong’s most striking feature is a thick, leaf-shaped (or lanceolate) single-edged blade that broadens significantly toward the tip, giving it exceptional chopping and slicing power while also allowing for effective thrusting. Typically measuring 18–22 inches in length on newer examples (with overall lengths around 20–28 inches), the blade’s weight and robust construction make it legendary for its ability to deliver devastating blows capable of severing limbs.
The barong served as both a practical weapon in warfare and raids and a symbol of Moro martial culture and resistance during centuries of conflict with Spanish, American, and other forces. Its design blends functionality with cultural artistry, remaining an iconic emblem of Philippine Moro heritage
