Overview

Tod Cutler - New Dudgeon Dagger

This new version of Tod Cutler's Dudgeon Dagger is a compact late 16th- to mid-17th-century sidearm descended from the earlier bollock dagger. Popular in Northern England and Scotland from approximately 1570 to 1660, this practical dagger was well suited to the close-quarters needs of the Border Reivers and is also representative of pieces seen in the early colonization in North America. Its compact proportions and distinctive lobed grip give it a characteristic period appearance. The piece blends well with a variety of ensembles from the 16th to 17th centuries and an excellent choice for the reenactor or collector who want a piece that has an aura of authenticity to it from its historically informed dimensions, materials and appearance.

The dagger features a nearly 9 inch, double-edged blade with a sturdy and very rigid diamond-section profile. The hilt retains the anatomical styling of its bollock-dagger predecessor, with a stylized impact plate and guard complemented by a brass peen button and two decorative washers passing through the lobes. Weighing at less than 6 ounces, the dagger feels very light in the hand and and quick to draw. The 3.75 inch grip is made from hard wood and maintains the compact, lobed form characteristic of the type. A double-layer, naturally tanned leather sheath accompanies the dagger, featuring embossed decoration, cord suspension, and a period-appropriate protective brass chape at the tip.
