Tod Cutler – Rugger / Bauernwehr Dagger

An everyday companion for the German, Czech or Swiss of the middling or lower classes, the Rugger (also known as a Bauernwehr) was a deceptively deadly and capable self-defense weapon. Though well-adapted to a variety of daily tasks, the ring shaped "nagel" riveted through the bolster to protect the knuckle and hand belies its primary purpose as a tool of self defense. These were quite popular in the late Medieval and Early Renaissance period and were a common sight both on homestead and in town.

The blade is forged from high carbon steel and has a thick spine which gives it substantial durability and solid rigidity; the blade shape coupled with its thickened spine gives it excellent penetrative ability and the blade retains wide enough to ensure it can slash and cut with decisive ability. The grip is constructed from two halves of polished wood which are sturdily riveted to a very thick tang for superb durability. The nagel itself is riveted entirely through the knife bolsters and tang and is peened on its other side and polished flush. Included with the dagger is a sheath of tough vegetable tanned leather. You can choose to leave it plain and either let it age on its own, or you can oil or dye it to your preference.
