51CrV4 Spring Steel

weapons collection

A European chromium-vanadium spring steel equivalent to 6150 – prized by premium swordsmiths for its outstanding toughness, shock resistance and durability.

51CrV4 is a European-standard chromium-vanadium spring steel with a carbon content of 0.47 – 0.55%, chromium at approximately 1.10%, vanadium at 0.12 – 0.15% and manganese at around 0.90%. It is the European equivalent of the well-regarded AISI 6150 steel and shares its excellent reputation among premium sword manufacturers.

The addition of vanadium is what sets this steel apart – it refines the grain structure and substantially increases toughness and shock resistance, reportedly achieving three to four times the impact resistance of steels such as differentially-tempered T10. When properly oil-hardened and tempered to the mid-50s HRC, 51CrV4 produces blades with impressive durability, flexibility and edge retention. Like all carbon steels, it requires regular maintenance to prevent rust.

This is the steel favored by some of the most respected names in sword making – Albion Armorers and Arms & Armor both use the equivalent 6150 for their premium blades, making 51CrV4 an excellent choice for high-performance functional swords.
