Overview
17th Century Main Gauche - Deepeeka
This gorgeously executed Main Gauche Parrying Dagger has a large "Sail" guard with precise piercework embellishment with reinforced rolled edges. Coupled with a meticulously wire-bound grip and an elevated leather sheath it is a great piece to pair with your rapier for a complete duelist's ensemble. Its large and long quillons and encompassing sail guard essentially function as a buckler, but enhanced with a thick and rigid blade that brings its own suite of defensive and offensive capabilities. Whether expanding your collection with an attractive piece with an even more attractive price or getting the final finishing flourish for a Faire ensemble.
The 12 inch blade is forged from C60 high carbon steel which is tempered and the blade itself with a reinforced ricasso and diamond cross section is quite rigid as befits a dagger of this type. The guard is of resilient steel and the wooden grip which is almost 4 inches in length is tightly bound in steel wire for a tactile as it is pleasing to the eye. The sheath is made from thick genuine vegetable tanned leather of high quality and it is finished with steel components with piercework to match the guard. At less than 2 lbs in weight and with a balance very near to the guard this large dagger is easy to wield, point and maneuver.
The main gauche (French for “left hand”) is a specialized parrying dagger used primarily in the Renaissance and early modern periods of European fencing, especially alongside a rapier. Designed to be wielded in the off-hand, it featured a broad, protective guard to shield the hand while intercepting, deflecting, or trapping an opponent’s blade. Its relatively short, stiff blade allowed the fencer to control the enemy’s weapon and create openings for a counterattack with the primary sword. Popular in Spanish, Italian, and French schools of fence during the 16th and 17th centuries, the main gauche was both a defensive tool and a mark of sophisticated dual-weapon combat, reflecting the period’s emphasis on precision, timing, and elegant technique in personal combat
