Overview
Asgar - Herringbone Wool Leg Wraps - Burgundy ad Gray
This set of leg wraps are crafted from wool cloth which is woven in a Herringbone pattern for a tight and durable cloth weave. This period cloth pattern has been found at Viking sites such as Hedeby, Birka and York. The fabric used to create these herringbone leg wraps is 60% wool, 37% polyester and 3% nylon - from Burgschneider of Germany.
A method of wearing leg wraps requires a fibula to secure them once they are bound around the leg. Small fibula that can be used for this purpose are available separately and are linked on this page under the also available section.
Known as winingas, wickelbander or puttees, leg wraps were a common way to both protect and support the lower legs. Although they are simple in design, leg wraps were an essential bit of kit for many throughout antiquity and the middle ages and were used by Roman Legionaries, Vikings, Normans and more. They aid in preventing leg injuries by giving a stout binding to the legs and they also give the lower legs protection from sharp brush and thorny undergrowth.
