Known throughout Germany as the Big Knife, the Grosse Messer hails from central and northern Europe where, in far off days of old, noblemen and peasants alike relied on it to protect hearth and home from the ravages of brigands, cut throats, outlaws and other assorted characters of ill repute. Due to its stout, wide blade and generously sized handle, it could be wielded in one or both hands and was capable of shearing through chain mail or cutting a man in half with a single strike.

Features a hand forged blade of sharpened 1050 high carbon steel. The guard and heavy pommel are made from blued steel and feature rosewood handle scales riveted to the swords full tang. For convenience and safety, the Grosse Messer comes with a strong, handsome scabbard crafted from wood and covered in black leather. It is reinforced with a steel chape and throat that has been blued to match the guard and pommel.

This sword tends to have a guard that is slightly loose. Unfortunately, this issue is so common that seems to effect the majority of them. We are no longer trying to quality control these out, so please keep this in mind when ordering. This can not be considered a defect and we can not exchange them for this issue.

Not bad Good: Solidly built and cuts very well. Takes and holds an edge easily. Comfortable to handle in two hands.

Bad: factory edge was rather dull on my sword. (Fixed with some effort). Threaded pommel was slightly rotated out of alignment with grip. Blued finish on hilt scratches easily.

Could have done better. I researched this blade quite a bit before buying and still found myself in error. The grip is comfortable enough but the tang is not something i would feel comfortable betting my life on. The blade is a beast with a profile made to hack and slash. Once i removed the handle scales it was akin to seeing a body builder that never worked out their legs. I cut mine up and made it into a short sword for my ol’lady. The sheath was ok.
