This Viking warrior’s sword is based on an existing original sword in the collection of the Musee de l’Armee in Paris. Dated to the mid 10th to mid 11th century, the sword blade bears the famed Ulfberht inscription on one side and upon the other it bears markings that to the modern observer appear as “DUNA+DUNA XX” – markings such as these were commonly an abbreviated phrase, or even were thought to bring good luck with particular combinations of symbols and letters.

The blade of this sword is forged from high carbon steel which was tempered to a 48 – 52 HRc hardness; its broad blade is purpose designed for powerful cutting strokes and fierce hacks. The blade is etched on both sides to match the inscription on the original and is sturdily mounted into the hilt with a peened pommel construction. The guard and pommel are crafted from steel and the wooden grip is tightly bound in leather to complete the sword. The matching scabbard is carved from wood and overlaid in tightly stitched vegetable-tanned leather to match the grip. It has a protective steel chape and wooden suspension slide affixed in tight leather banding to the scabbard and it allows for the sword to be slung from a baldric or sword belt (belts not included).

This is a fairly good representation of what it is, but not perfect. The blade overall is good and I ordered it sharpened, and sharpened it more myself after receiving it, and it cuts very well. The handle is actually fairly comfortable, which is something that I was not expecting looking at it. The pommel is an issue for me though, as it digs into my wrist when I swing, though some technique mostly got rid of that, still I think the handle should be ever so slightly longer and the pommel not as sharp, I plan on grinding the edges of the pommel down to hopefully help with that. The peen on the end of the pommel seems very sturdy and has no wobble at all, and the guard doesn’t wobble either. The scabbard is better than I was expecting at this price point and would work very well with a strap for carrying. The weight on the sword is front heavy, which is correct for the style of sword it is, but I feel like it is slightly too far forward. The etchings on each side show very well and look quite good. Overall, for the price point, I would call it a good sword, and for anyone who is familiar with bladesmithing, it can easily be further improved.
