Overview

Hanwei Bamboo Mat Katana - Discontinued

The Hanwei Bamboo Mat Katana features a chu-kissaki blade of Hanwei's own high-alloy HWS-2S steel, which combines impressive performance with a striking O-choji hamon. This steel is made in Hanwei's new factory, with high-tech equipment, producing a very pure, advanced-metallurgy blade with excellent edge-holding capability and resilience.

The fittings feature a bamboo-themed black iron tsuba, textured in a bamboo mat design with a jointed bamboo rim and highlighted with gold-tipped bamboo leaves. The fuchi/kashira follow the same theme and the golden menuki feature a pair of sparrows. The saya is finished in high-gloss lacquer with horn fittings.

Please Note: It is common for the saya scabbards to have some minor to moderate cosmetic blemishing present

Nice blade The Hamon on this blade is quite beautiful with only one fault in the polish on the mune at the tip. The measurements on mine differed from what was stated a little bit, an inch longer in the tsuka and an inch shorter in the blade. The tuba and fittings are iron but barely had any activity with my magnet. The tsuka has a slight hourglass shape and the diamonds in the wrap are acceptable. The same has a nice emperor node and his hishigami paper was used in the wrap. The tang is nicely filed and signed my the maker. The only reason I’m giving this sword 4 stars is because the tsuka was cracked near the top. Not that big of a deal for me because I bought this sword with the intention of customizing it.

Master sword smith Paul Chen created Hanwei Swords and led the early industry by creating authentic handmade swords of the highest grade steel over the last several decades. A favorite amongst the industry, the original Hanwei factory suffered from a fire and ownership changes. In 2025, the factory closed and original collaborator Frenchie Jin’s forge (Dragon King / Kingston Arms) has taken over, improving and reintroducing past models. The reinvented Hanwei focuses primarily on Japanese and Chinese models, including the Performance Series Katana. Many of the original European models are now adopted as part of the Kingston Arms line.
