The Practical Plus XL Katana, a cornerstone of the CAS Hanwei legacy has been recreated and re-issued here with all its classical dimensions and even a few improvements. The Practical Plus XL is a battle-ready katana optimized for maximum cutting power on heavy targets. It is forged from differentially-hardened 1566 high carbon steel which is well tempered and sharpened. Retaining the hilt furniture of the Practical Plus Katana, its newlyupgraded natural components feature a genuine rayskin-wrapped 11.25-inch tsuka with high-grip tsuka-ito, all to ensure a secure, traditional grip. The blade tang is double-pegged for durability and reliability
The XL with its heavy cutting blade geometry is a 28.25-inch blade giving the sword a 6-inch point of balance which excels at slicing through not only straw bamboo mats but also properly prepared thick bamboo targets and delivering unmatched power for demanding and repeated cutting drills. Crafted at the Dragon King Forge in Dalian by Hanwei’s original artisans under Frenchie Jin, the retooled fittings—tsuba, fuchi, kashira, and menuki—boast a crisp, authentic design evocative of early Japanese originals and are paired with a vivid hamon on the clay-tempered blade (60 HRC edge, 40 HRC spine). while the included wooden saya with lacquered finish (with variable sageo color) completes the sword. Perfect for heavy target cutting it surpasses the standard Practical Plus Katana for practitioners who need optimal cutting performance.

Shop Hanwei Swords, Armor & More
Master sword smith Paul Chen created Hanwei Swords and led the early industry by creating authentic handmade swords of the highest grade steel over the last several decades. A favorite amongst the industry, the original Hanwei factory suffered from a fire and ownership changes. In 2025, the factory closed and original collaborator Frenchie Jin’s forge (Dragon King / Kingston Arms) has taken over, improving and reintroducing past models. The reinvented Hanwei focuses primarily on Japanese and Chinese models, including the Performance Series Katana. Many of the original European models are now adopted as part of the Kingston Arms line.
