The remake of the classic Hanwei Practical XL Katana is a battle-ready powerhouse forged from differentially-hardened 1566 high carbon steel which is designed for maximum cutting power on heavy targets while incorporating refined upgrades. Boasting a 29-inch blade with a 5.5-inch point of balance, this katana delivers devastating cuts that will cleanly slice through straw mats and thick bamboo making it ideal for martial artists and cutting enthusiasts seeking performance without excess.
Crafted at the Dragon King Forge in Dalian by Hanwei’s original artisans under Frenchie Jin, the retooled fittings—tsuba, fuchi, kashira, and menuki—feature a crisp, clean design reminiscent of traditional Japanese originals, paired with synthetic tsuka-ito over a double-pegged, full-tang handle for durability and easy upkeep. The bladeis clay-tempered to a 60 HRC edge and 40 HRC spine, producing a vivid hamon and exceptional resilience. Measuring 41 inches overall, the Practical XL Katana’s blade geometry excels in heavy-duty cutting, surpassing lighter models like the Practical XL Light in sheer cutting power at a minor sacrifice to agility. Its included wood and lacquer sayawith sageo cord complete the sword.

Shop Hanwei Swords, Armor & More
Master sword smith Paul Chen created Hanwei Swords and led the early industry by creating authentic handmade swords of the highest grade steel over the last several decades. A favorite amongst the industry, the original Hanwei factory suffered from a fire and ownership changes. In 2025, the factory closed and original collaborator Frenchie Jin’s forge (Dragon King / Kingston Arms) has taken over, improving and reintroducing past models. The reinvented Hanwei focuses primarily on Japanese and Chinese models, including the Performance Series Katana. Many of the original European models are now adopted as part of the Kingston Arms line.
