This Late 13th Century Sword is recreated from a very well preserved original which was found in Lake Neuenburg in Switzerland and is now kept in Swiss National Museum. A Type XIV sword with a broad and robust base of the blade which tapers to allow for capable cutting and thrusting; it has proportions which allow for it to be a companion sidearm sword that could be comfortably worn both on foot and horseback all day.

The blade of this recreation has a blade of tempered high carbon steel. The original had inlaid inscription in the fuller groove and these markings are reproduced here with that design etched into the blade on both sides. To the modern viewer, the etching looks like “NnSD” contained within two crosses and it is unknown what precisely the inscription meant. Markings such as this are seen on many swords of this period and they could have been abbreviated prayers, mottos, or even good luck symbols.

The guard and pommel are crafted from steel and the grip is wood with a tight binding of quality leather. Included with the sword is a wooden scabbard which is overlaid in tight leather and completed with sword hangers which can be adjusted with their antiqued brass buckles to modify the height and angle the sword hangs at from a sword belt.

The sword is great! Well made for the price. There are some downsides though. The factory edge is completely blunt and it’s weight is a bit heavy for an arming sword. I didn’t get it sharpened cause I wanted to use it at a renn faire, but even so it was blunt.

TLDR: good craftsmanship for the price, looks very nice, but is heavy for an arming sword, and got a blunt sword even with factory edge.
