For the warrior, armor for his hand was supremely important. Though guards are prominent on most swords it would be foolish to rely on them alone – at least not until the complex guards of Renaissance blades. The hand is remarkably fragile, as even shallow cuts can damage or sever critical tendons below the skin, ensuring a swift end to a fighting career. Chainmail gloves help defend the fighter’s hand from such errant slashes.

Look cool, work well. I got these to use with baskethilt swords, as lacrosse or Red Dragon gloves are too bulky to fit inside. The baskets provide a good amount of protection, but obviously backup is needed. I am amazed at how much protection they provided. I actually never got hit in the sword hand, but after doing some broadsword and targe we switched to arming swords. Heavier swords than the mortuary swords. I took two solid hits to my shield hand, somehow, and only have a minimal amount of soreness on my middle knuckle. You have to work them into the baskets a bit ( Rawlings Knight Shop nylons and Hanwei mortuary swords ), but once in they are comfortable enough and provide a good grip. The only reason for 4 out of 5 is the stitching came undone on the right index finger of one pair, could be an anomaly as the other stitching seems strong. I would consider using these for nylon swords without the baskethilt, I think they would do the job.

No more wounds. I bought these for a family member last Christmas. True to their “ancestors”, these gloves can handle a variety of heavy blade cuts with ease. Only complaint was the price.
