Overview
Legacy Arms - Witham Seax - New Version
This new version of Legacy Arms Witham Viking Seax sports some notable improvements, namely a superior and better tempered steel and a reduced diameter grip which is substantially more comfortable in the hand. The sharpened blade can cut and puncture to great ability. Its guard and pommel cap are of steel and feature inlaid copper accents; its grip is wood bound in supple leather. Included is a stitched belt sheath of leather with hanging loops for wear.
The scramseax, also known by various forms such as scramsax, scramaseax, or simply seax, was a single-edged knife used by the Germanic peoples. It served both as a weapon and a tool, with sizes ranging from 2.9" to 29.5". Larger versions, referred to as langseax, were likely employed in combat, while smaller versions, or hadseax, were used primarily as tools. Medium-sized scramseaxes often served both functions. Typically worn in a horizontal sheath at the front of the belt, the scramseax's name derives from "scram," meaning food, and "seax," meaning blade, suggesting a "food knife." There is some debate about the term's historical accuracy, with theories suggesting that the Saxons might have been named after this blade, analogous to how the Franks were named for their francisca. This notion is supported by early Saxon heraldry depicting scramaseaxes.
