Moro Punyal – NLA

The Punyal is one of the weapons of the Moro and is favored by the warriors of southern Mindanao as a vicious close-quarters weapon. The Punyal blade can come in many forms, such as a wavy-bladed Kris-like weapon or a broad-bladed one such as the example seen here and they are typically worn by being tucked into a colorful sash at the waist. Those bearing a Punyal in this manner take great pride in their fighting knife and a group of men with them will often show them off to one another as a conversation piece. Though a warrior will typically draw a sword first, he won’t be shy about taking up his Punyal for close-in fighting. The broad blade and clipped point make it a powerful slashing and cutting weapon with a fierce piercing tip; the edge of the blade is cleverly located beneath the handle to ensure that when contact is made with an opponent’s weapon the blade edges are kept far away from the hand.

This Punyal from Traditional Filipino Weapons was made in the Philippines and has a blade of 5160 / D2 high carbon steel which is both sharp and well-tempered. The guard and bolster are steel and the grip is carved from wood and polished to a smooth finish. Included with this fighting dagger is a wooden scabbard with steel fittings.
