The PSK (Performance Series Katana) Pro Elite Katana returns with everything that made the original a standout alongside meaningful upgrades and fine refinement in materials and performance. Staying true to its roots, the newly redesigned fittings (tsuba, fuchi, kashira, and menuki) feature crisp detailing made possible through updated tooling, echoing the look and feel of the early production models. At its core remains the proven blade: a differentially hardened, forged 1566 high carbon steel blade with the same reliable geometry practitioners have come to trust. The sword is a fine centerpoint for a Japanese blade collection or a practical workhorse for repeated and rigorous tatami target cutting to hone one’s technique to perfection.
The CAS Hanwei Performance Series has long set the benchmark in the Japanese sword market. Favored by cutting practitioners, these updated models continue to outperform competitors in their class through consistent quality, durability, and cutting performance. Widely imitated but never equaled, CAS Hanwei swords carry over four decades of manufacturing expertise, offering confidence with every cut.
Designed for those who want added reach and leverage a larger katana affords, the PSK Pro Elite builds on the Practical Pro platform with thoughtful enhancements toward power, reach and leverage to optimize the cutting potential of both the sword and its wielder. It retains the familiar furniture while upgrading to a tightly wrapped cotton tsuka-it that measures a generous 13″ length while incorporating Shinogi-zukuri blade geometry. This combination allows for versatility across a wide range of cutting targets—from light tatami to denser materials—making it an adaptable choice for serious practitioners. The 29″ blade is differentially hardened in the traditional manner, achieving an approximate hardness of HRC 60 at the edge and HRC 40 at the spine, balancing sharpness with resilience. The sword balances at the 5 3/4″ mark – a fine balance that ensures the blade is both quick and easy to wield whilst striking with the force needed for truly powerful cuts. The sword is matched with a wooden saya scabbard finished in a fine glossy black lacquer and a sageo cord. Also included is a cloth sword bag for storage and transport.
Originally produced at the renowned Hanwei forge, which closed in 2024, production of these swords has transitioned to the skilled craftsmen of the Dragon King forge in Dalian. Led by Frenchie Jin—a former protégé of Paul Chen and a key figure in the original Hanwei manufacturing process—the legacy of the brand continues in capable hands. With deep knowledge of the design and construction of these swords, the next chapter of CAS Hanwei maintains the standards that made the name iconic.
