Overview
Performance Series Katana - XL Light Katana by Paul Chen / Hanwei
The Hanwei Performance Series Katana (PSK) XL Light Katana returns with the same high-performance cutting characteristics that made the original Performance Series a favorite among practitioners and is now enhanced with refined fittings and updated craftsmanship. Maintaining the proven geometry and handling that defined the original, this reissued model combines traditional Japanese styling with a fast, responsive blade built specifically for efficient cutting practice. Whether displayed as part of a Japanese sword collection or used extensively in dojo cutting sessions, the PSK XL Light continues to deliver the balance of speed, durability, and reliability that has made the Performance Series so respected.
The CAS Hanwei Performance Series was originally developed to provide practitioners with specialized blade geometries tailored to different cutting styles and target types. The XL Light profile was designed with speed and maneuverability in mind, offering a lighter-feeling sword capable of rapid follow-up cuts and reduced fatigue during extended training. By incorporating bo-hi (fullers) into the blade, the XL Light achieves a lively handling character while preserving cutting efficiency and structural strength. Forged from durable 1566 high carbon steel, the 29" blade is differentially-hardened to combine a hard 60 HRC cutting edge with a tougher, more flexible spine at 40 HRC hardness. This traditional heat treatment approach helps provide excellent edge retention while improving resilience during repetitive cutting practice. The XL Light geometry gives the sword quick acceleration and fluid movement, making it particularly well suited for lighter tatami targets, soft cutting media, and practitioners who favor fast transitions and precision.
The 10 1/2" tsuka offers secure two-handed leverage while maintaining compact handling characteristics. Wrapped tightly in black cotton ito over panels of faux rayskin, the grip provides dependable traction and comfort during use. Updated tsuba, fuchi, kashira, and menuki feature cleaner detail and sharper lines thanks to newly recreated molds, preserving the familiar aesthetic of the original Practical and Performance Series swords while giving the fittings a refreshed appearance. A wood-core saya finished in glossy black lacquer accompanies the sword, complete with sageo cord for traditional wear. Also included is a protective cloth sword bag for storage and transport.
Originally associated with the legendary Hanwei forge, the Performance Series legacy continues through the skilled craftsmen of the Dragon King forge in Dalian under the direction of Frenchie Jin, a longtime figure in the original Hanwei production process. The result is a continuation of the Performance Series tradition: practical Japanese swords engineered for real cutting performance, trusted by martial artists and enthusiasts around the world.

Master sword smith Paul Chen created Hanwei Swords and led the early industry by creating authentic handmade swords of the highest grade steel over the last several decades. A favorite amongst the industry, the original Hanwei factory suffered from a fire and ownership changes. In 2025, the factory closed and original collaborator Frenchie Jin’s forge (Dragon King / Kingston Arms) has taken over, improving and reintroducing past models. The reinvented Hanwei focuses primarily on Japanese and Chinese models, including the Performance Series Katana. Many of the original European models are now adopted as part of the Kingston Arms line.
