Russian Shashka Saber – Deepeeka

(2 customer reviews)

$91.88$148.95

This Russian Shashka sword has a blade forged from high carbon steel; the bolster and pommel are brass and the grip is carved from polished wood. Included is a wood-core scabbard which is bound in leather and completed with brass fittings. One hanging ring is brass, the other is steel. The Shasqua is usually worn edge-up in a manner similar to a katana.

Made famous by the Cossack cavalrymen who wielded these distinctive, swift-slashing sabers, this Shashqa is reproduced from the swords produced for Red Army Cossack regiments as denoted by the star, hammer and sickle on the pommel.

Cavalry may have been thought of as obsolete in WWII, but the Russian Army understood the value of a fast-moving and largely self-sustaining cavalry force which could rapidly range over the vast steppes without needing gasoline in a war theater where supply lines would be stretched. Knowing that the supply lines of their foes would be overburdened in such a vast landscape, Cossack cavalrymen could harass and intercept reinforcements and supplies at will, as well as pounce on isolated forces who were low on equipment and morale.

It’s well made and I can tell it was hand crafted, but I noticed whoever sharpened it, (which I paid for), didn’t sharpen the entire blade. About three inches of the blade from the bottom was left completely blunt. I’m satisfied with the sword, but next time I’ll just buy it blunt and sharpen it myself.

The sword is decent but QC is quite bad. Scabbard’s metal cap was not sized correctly for the blade so it catches when it’s drawn. This was a gift so I didn’t have the option to return and wait for a month. Shop was unwilling to discount me any $ back and said this company just has mediocre QC. Still cuts, but had to file it a bit.
