Russian Shashka – Deepeeka

$87.75$118.95

This Russian Shashka Saber has a blade crafted from EN45 high carbon steel. The bolster and pommel are of brass and the ridged grip is crafted from carved wood. A leather retaining strap is fitted to the pommel.

The wood-core scabbard is overlaid in black leather and finished with protective brass fittings. It can be worn with its center brass hanging ring and the leather strap with steel D ring.

The sword of the famed Cossacks and later adopted by the cavalry of the Soviet Union, the sweeping blade of the Shasqa is eminently suited for slashing cuts from horseback. The long fuller reduces weight and the thick spine of the single-edged blade ensures that it strikes home with considerable force.

The curved pommel not only keeps the hand in the grip, but can be used to brace the back of the hand against the pommel and allow the sword to slightly pivot around the back of the palm in the strike. A similar form can be seen on Turkish and Persian horsemans sabers. The Shaska is typically worn edge-side up, like a katana.

This thing is a real wrist breaker. I was expecting something a bit more agile, but this monster chopper pulls your entire body through every cut. It’s almost straight, so the center of gravity feels very far forward, and it’s pretty close to the length of a full cavalry saber. No delicate cut and thrust weapon, this: it’s for smashing your way through the opponent’s guard and chopping him down. It’s blunt, but if you use this for even the lightest sparring, you’ll crack someone’s skull right through the helmet. It’s also far too heavy to use in solo practice for most sabre drills, other than lunging.

On the positive side, all that metal in the blade means that this sword is functionally indestructible, and the grip is both attractive and comfortable. The sword fits snugly in it’s scabbard, and the scabbard itself is of a surprising quality for an item of this price. The fittings are tight and there is not rattle.
