Tod Cutler – Scottish Swirk

The Scottish Swirk is a striking “sword-sized dirk” conceived by Tod Cutler—an imaginative fusion of form and function that blends the utility of the dirk with the reach and presence of a short sword. Though such weapons may not have strictly existed in the past, the Swirk embodies a compelling “what-might-have-been” elegance that bridges historical inspiration and creative design and proves that the Scottish Dirk can be re-imagined as a very formidable sword! The Swirk sports a blade length of 34 inches forged with a single edge, fullers, and filework that speak to both quality and visual depth.

Its design leans on the characteristic lines of Scottish edged arms, while pushing into a more extended silhouette. The blade balances at 5 inches from the guard, giving it a forward feel that supports cutting power without becoming unwieldy. The grip is sculpted to be comfortable in the hand while echoing the compact proportions of traditional dirks. The grip’s form encourages the user’s hand to flow naturally from pommel to guard, a thoughtful touch in an otherwise bold weapon.

Tod Cutler styled the Swirk with a dark wood grip and brass guard and pommel, and presents it in a scabbard and belt assembly inspired by traditional Scottish dirk sheaths. Though the concept is speculative, every element is executed with care and craftsmanship, making the Swirk fully realized as an sword ready for wear and use.
