Venetian Infantryman’s Sword

This Venetian Infantrymans Sword has a blade of Chrome-Vanadium high carbon steel tempered to a 50 HRC hardness. The elaborate guard and pommel are antiqued steel and the wooden grip is tightly overlaid in twisted steel wire.

The blade of this late Medieval and Early Renaissance sword has a tapered cut-and-thrust profile suitable as a sidearm for the Venetian heavy infantry who needed a battlefield sword more burly than the increasingly thin forms of early rapiers which were then popular as a civilian sidearm. The guard not only has a sizable clamshell guard to protect the hand, but it also has crab-claw quillons designed to entrap and ensnare the blade of the opponent – these features give dueling options to the bearer not afforded by simpler designs. This sword is an ideal and sturdy weapon of war for the Venetian soldier who had the knowledge and experience of advanced dueling techniques of the time.
