The Seax was the fighting blade and tool for the everyman in Scandinavian and Saxon society. Commonly carried in a horizontally-aligned sheath at the belt, the Viking had his seax near at hand, whether he needed it as a tool or a quick-drawn fighting blade. Many seax were dagger-sized, though many examples would stretch to the size of short swords. This example sits on that fence as either a long dagger or a short sword.

Easier to construct than the sword, the quality of surviving seax vary widely as poorer men carried crude, though functional seax whilst others are masterworks of pattern-steel and embellished inlay reserved for only the most affluent Vikings. The spine on many seax belie its use as a tool, as it allows the user to lightly pound the spine with a mallet to drive the blade through a material like rope for a finer cut then with a sawing motion. Though they existed with the typically longer swords, there are some accounts of Vikings who preferred fighting with their shorter, fast seax. A testament to the universal use of the seax lies in the fact the the Anglo-Saxons derived the last half of their tribal name to the weapon.

This blade of this seax is made from high carbon steel. The hilt and pommel are of blackened steel. The wooden grip is tightly wrapped with wire that has been blackened. It comes with a leather sheath that has been stitched with leather strips

1 review for Viking Dagger – Seax – Discontinued – Deepeeka

    1. Mike M.

A nice Match for the Viking Broad Sword by Deepeeka I love Deepeeka items but this one kinda let me down, especially since I bought it to match my Viking Broad sword that has a similar matching pommel and guard. just read any of my reviews of deepeeka Viking swords and Others I have come to own. The photos for this could be a little more revealing, when I bought this I assumed the straight side would be the edge, as it looks. Also I do prefer broken back Seax as they have a stronger point, and are sharpened on the straight edge.
That was the first let down, my next assumption that was wrong was the fact that the handle is supposed to be wrapped in a gold/bronze like colored twisted wire, mine was black, and the pommel and guard did not have the same quality as the matching Broad Sword, which is awesome and flawless. The Swords hilt was comprised of Metal whether its iron or whatever, the material used on this seax seemed like it had a metal base buried under layers of resin or some artificial casting material.
The final flaws are not as bad, the tip had been blunted, its hard to sharpen, and its not up to par with its massive big broad counterpart. That’s the worst of it.
Enough negativity, this thing doesn’t suck, it has many good qualities as well. Its not expensive, its pretty big almost short sword big, the polish on the blade is nice almost mirror like. The Sheath that accompanies this dagger seax hybrid is nice, but could use some belt loops for horizontal wearing, but they leave that up to you. I do leather work so I gave it some stamped imagery and made my own loops from some nice oil tanned leather to match, but can still be worn diagonally or vertically without any leather work.
If you have yourself the great beast that is the Deepeeka Viking Broad Sword, get this, its worth it. Also by now the quality of deepeeka has gone up significantly, and the one I bought DID NOT COME FROM KULT OF ATHENA, and was bought two years ago, which is why mine wasn’t as good.
For this Seax I give it 3 stars, or more accurately a 7.0 / 10.0
