The US M1833 Dragoon Saber has a pipe-backed blade of 1055 high carbon steel. One side of the blade is etched with ‘’United States Dragoons’’ over laurel leaves. The hilt is of brass and the grip is leather finished with a spiralled band of twisted brass. The companion scabbard is crafted from steel and is finished with a pair of steel hanging rings. The M1833 Saber was manufactured by the Ames Manufacturing Company specifically for the 1st and 2nd United States Dragoons Regiments. About 6,100 of these sabers were constructed from 1833 to 1839. The sword was heavily inspired by the British 1822 Light Cavalry Saber and the M1833 was used in the Second Seminole War, the Southwest Indian Wars and the Mexican War. The pipe-back spine of the blade not only strengthens the blade, but it stiffens the spine; a design that lends itself well to thrusting on the charge as the blade will minimize flex in the thrust and will efficiently transmit maximum energy into the target. |
