Overview

Landsknecht Emporium - Günther Messer with Scabbard - Beechwood Grip

One of Landsknecht Emporium's most popular Langes Messer,  the Günther is a type M3D Messer with a wide blade ideal for powerful chops and cuts. The sharp and well-tempered blade is ground freehand from a blank of 6150/51crv4 steel. It's a rather robust weapon, with the most blade presence of our current Messers. It's a perfect choice for fencers, who like to face in the bind.

The hilt components are also ground freehand from mild steel. Landsknecht Emporium is letting some hand-work variance happen in the hilt accessories to not only keep the price manageable, but to also give the sword a more authentic handcrafted appearance at the same time. The Nagel is a separate piece peened on the other side of the quillon block, as it should be. The quillons are slid downwards from the tip with the blade protruding in the bottom. The handmade grip slabs of Beechwood are affixed by a set of solid brass rivets which create a robust hilt assembly with the grip and the thick blade tang. The Nagel is a separate piece peened on the other side of the quillon block, as it should be. The quillons are slid downwards from the tip with the blade protruding in the bottom - a feature seen on depictions of period originals.

The sword is paired with a wooden core scabbard which is bound in oxblood hue leather; it is completed with a two-point suspension system featuring a knotted leather belt with bronze fittings, brass rings and an adjustable belt buckle.

Landsknecht Emporium products aim to have the aesthetics of historical pieces, not the finish of mass-produced items. Each product bears the signs of its making; small tool marks and imperfections, which do not affect the build quality or usability but give each of our pieces its unique character.

Incredible sword, out of the 4 I own this one is by far the nicest and the sharpest. So sharp the false edge got me the first time I went to clean it.

So good I picked it up and I was stunned. Out of my 10 sword it the best most fun and coolest. It feels very hand made.

This was the first messer I ever bought, back in December of 2023. Since then I have become obsessed with langes messer, kreigsmesser, dussack and cutlass. I’ve handled the Albion soldat before and honestly I like the Gunther so much more. Despite being a wide blade capable of powerful cleaving blows with immense cutting power and a false edge capable of cutting tatami just as easily as the true edge it is very light and maneuverable. Cutting performance out of the box is incredible as both edges are properly sharpened and the blade geometry is excellent. The signs of being handmade and little imperfections present make it feel like a real weapon out of history made to be depended upon by a historical person. The grip with the swell towards the pommel and faceted grip panels feels amazing in hand providing both excellent edge alignment and comfort. The scabbard is sturdy and of remarkably high quality for how much it costs and the two point suspension makes it very easy to carry and quick to draw. The price for this package is amazing it feels as though, with the messer and scabbard, it should be at least 1000 dollars. Couldn’t recommend this one highly enough.

I now own three Landsknecht Emporium blades w/scabbards; the Gustav Messer, the Günther Messer, and the Rotmilan Kriegsmesser. I bought the Günther first and was so blown away by the quality that I took a risk and got the other two. All three blades are of exceptional (and equal) quality, with a satin smooth finish that’s unblemished. The quillons, hilt, nagel and pommels (if it has one) are extremely well made and sturdy showing just enough tooling marks to be obviously handmade but not detracting in the least in looks. The blades are quick and light in the hand. The scabbards are honestly gorgeous, and KoA should really show a pic of the back sides just to show the care that was put into making them.

The underside of the guard has some tool marks but otherwise it looks great and is an absolute cutter. The balance is great and it feels good in the hand. It comes with a nice sheath that looks great

The Maker

Landsknecht Emporium

The Landsknecht was the archetypal mercenary of the late 15th and most of the 16th century, with their heyday being in the second quarter of the latter. They were pretty much the meanest & baddest soldiers around that time, with a heightened sense of fashion. Our goal is to create weapons a period Landsknecht would be proud to use, mostly on a budget that keeps it accessible to modern recruits.

Due to the continuous research we are doing, we sometimes stray from that time and location to better understand trends that led to the development of weapons we aim to recreate. We are progressing from simpler items towards the more complex ones. We started with making Messers in 2016 and it was our main focus in these past few years. We intend to cover most of the styles relevant to our interest, while we’re planning to expand our repertoire with Katzbalgers, Bidenhanders, various daggers and all kinds of awesome stabbiness in the foreseeable future.

We founded Landsknecht Emporium to this end in March of 2016 in the outskirts of rural Hungary, at the end of a dead-end dirt road in a house not unlike those of murderous hillbillies in the movies that we call home.
