Overview
Chainmail Half Hauberk - Wedge Riveted Flat Rings Alternating with Solid Flat Rings - Lord of Battles
This maile half-hauberk is intended to be worn beneath plate or brigandine armor to provide an underlayer of chainmail defense beneath the gaps in an exterior brigandine or plate armor. The armor neatly covers the arms, collar, armpits and sides of the torso and by omitting much of the lower half of mail defense it greatly lowers the total overall weight of ones armor since those areas are already aptly covered by the exterior armor and potentially a maile skirt. It has also been cleverly designed to have a tapered torso so that it lays flat and in-line with the body and your padded armor instead of hanging straight down where it would be far less useful.
The half-haubek is constructed from wedge-riveted flat rings which alternate with solid flat rings. This historically accurate method of construction greatly reduces the amount of riveting required to construct chainmail by matching and alternating riveted links with solid rings created with a die and punch. The individual rings have an interior diameter of 9 mm.
Please Note: If in doubt about what size to order it is best to order a size larger than your standard shirt size as this mail armor can get tight in the armpit area when worn over a well-padded gambeson. A larger size will be both easier to don and less likely to hinder movement.

Q&A
Questions from the community
Q What is this half-hauberk intended to be worn with? Common Question
This half-hauberk is designed to be worn beneath plate or brigandine armor, covering the gaps that exterior armor leaves open. It protects the arms, collar, armpits, and sides of the torso while leaving the lower torso lighter, since that area is already covered by the outer armor and, if worn, a maille skirt.
Q Why does the torso taper instead of hanging straight? Common Question
The tapered torso is cut so the mail lies flat against the body and in line with a padded gambeson underneath, rather than hanging loose. This keeps it close-fitting under plate or brigandine rather than bulking up under the outer armor.
Q What are the rings made of and how are they constructed? Common Question
The rings are mild steel in 17 gauge, with a 9 mm interior diameter. Construction alternates wedge-riveted flat rings with solid flat rings punched from a die, a historically accurate method that cuts down on the number of rivets needed while still producing a strong, wearable mail sheet.
Q How do I pick the right size? Common Question
Sizing runs Medium (fits chest up to 43'', weighs 13 lbs 4 oz), Large (fits chest up to 49'', weighs 15 lbs 13 oz), and X-Large (fits chest up to 55'', weighs 17 lbs 5.6 oz). If you're between sizes, size up, since this mail can get tight under the arms when worn over a well-padded gambeson, and a larger size dons more easily and moves better.
Q How should I care for this maille to prevent rust? Common Question
This is mild steel, so keep it wiped down and dry after handling or wear, especially in humid conditions, and give the rings a light coat of oil for storage. Store it somewhere dry rather than sealed in plastic, since trapped moisture is what drives rust on maille like this.
Q Is this made for historical reenactment or display? Common Question
Yes, the alternating wedge-riveted and solid flat ring construction reproduces a historical maille-making method, making it well suited to historical reenactment and as a functional underlayer beneath plate or brigandine kit.
