This 3rd Century Roman Spatha has a dual-fullered blade of unsharpened high carbon steel. The hilt is comprised of tightly segmented plates of bone. The grip is likewise carved of bone. The sword is fitted with a scabbard of wood overlaid with red leather and fitted with a large, round brass chape and a brass suspension loop.

Though the Gladius is the iconic Roman sword, it was actually not used through much of the later Empire. Initially Cavalrymen wanted longer swords, and by the late Roman Empire the Gladius had been discarded for the long-bladed Spatha – a sword that was quite similar to the blades being used by the barbarians around the borders of the Empire in Europe. Its use spanned from the 1st – 5th centuries, but close descendents of the sword were used well into the following migration period after the Empire.
