Q&A
Questions from the community
Q What is this poleaxe built for? Common Question
This is an armored sport combat weapon, built for the hard-hitting rigors of HMB / Buhurt fighting. The head and haft are both thickened and reinforced to handle repeated full-contact strikes.
Q What is the head made of and how is the edge finished? Common Question
The head is forged from G65 spring steel at 6 mm thick, with thick, rounded edges left blunt for sport fighting. It is not a sharp weapon and is not meant to be sharpened.
Q How is the head attached to the haft? Common Question
The head is pinned to the haft and further reinforced with a wooden axe wedge, a traditional method for locking an axe head securely in place. This construction is meant to keep the head tight through the repeated heavy impacts of Buhurt fighting.
Q What is the haft made of, and how should I care for it? Common Question
The haft is extra-thick, high quality ash wood, chosen for its strength under hard contact. Keep the wood lightly oiled to preserve it and prevent drying or cracking over time.
Q How heavy is it and how is the weight distributed? Common Question
This poleaxe weighs 6 lbs 6 oz over an overall length of 52 inches. That weight and length put the mass out at the business end, giving the kind of leverage and momentum needed for forceful strikes in armored sport fighting.
Q What does the grip look like? Common Question
Photos show the haft wrapped in black cord or leather near the head for a secure striking grip, with a matching crisscross wrap at the base of the handle. The rest of the haft is left as bare, light-colored ash wood.
Q Can this weapon be sharpened for cutting use? Common Question
No. The edge ships blunt with thick, rounded contours, and it is built and classified strictly for sport combat rather than cutting use.
Q Where is this poleaxe made? Common Question
It is made in Ukraine.
Q How well does it hold up to repeated heavy hits? Common Question
The head is pinned and wedge-reinforced, and the haft is built extra thick in ash wood, both aimed at standing up to the repeated heavy contact of Buhurt fighting rather than light sparring.
Q How do I maintain the steel head over time? Common Question
Wipe the steel head down after use to remove moisture and sweat, apply a light coat of oil, and store it in a dry place to prevent rust. Keeping the wood haft lightly oiled as well will help both parts hold up over repeated use.
