Hanbon Forge – Tsuribito Katana

The Tsuribito Katana from Hanbon Forge features a calm and idyllic scene on its tsuba; a calm angler fishing in a forest pond. The forged blade of 1060 high carbon steel is tempered and sharpened for action; measuring a bit more than 28.5 inches, the blade has a bo-hi groove to reduce weight and to keep the sword favorably balanced at a lively 4.5 inches and light in the hand at just over 2 lbs. Its tsuba and other koshirae are antique-finished and the wooden grip is fitted with panels of genuine rayskin which is bound by synthetic silk ito. The wooden saya scabbard is finished with a glossy black lacquer and a matching sageo. Included with the sword is a cloth sword bag, a scabbard bag, a manufacturer's production certificate, sword stand and a gift / display box for a full presentation.

The Tsuribito (釣り人), or fisherman, carries a rich symbolism in Japanese art that can be connected to the ideals of the samurai and warrior. The image of a solitary fisherman patiently waiting beside the water evokes themes of patience, discipline, calmness, and mastery over one's emotions—qualities highly valued in the warrior tradition. Rather than relying on force, the fisherman succeeds through attentiveness, timing, and an understanding of nature, much as a skilled warrior must remain composed, observant, and ready to act at precisely the right moment. When depicted alongside elements such as water, cherry blossoms, or dragonflies, the Tsuribito can therefore suggest a balance between strength and tranquility, action and stillness, and the warrior's ability to remain centered amid the uncertainties of life.
