Hanwei Original Tiger Elite Katana
The Paul Chen / Hanwei Tiger Elite Katana has been re-designed from kissaki to kashira. Utilizing a hand forged and folded Performance Series katana blade and some of the finest fittings available, the Tiger is equally at home as a cutting blade or showpiece. The K120C powder steel blade is differentially tempered using the traditional claying method which produces a HRC60 edge and HRC40 back. This allows for superior edge holding and cutting ability while allowing the blade to absorb the shock of a blow. The hamon (temper line) and hada (folding pattern) are very prominent. The koshirae (fittings) are all made from blackened bronze and detailed in gold. The tsuba (guard) is made from blackened iron with a stalking tiger motif. The same is of the finest ray skin while the tsuka-ito (handle wrap) and sageo (scabbard cord) are made from top-quality japanese cotton. The Tiger is supplied with a protective cloth bag and traditional maintenance kit.

Master sword smith Paul Chen created Hanwei Swords and led the early industry by creating authentic handmade swords of the highest grade steel over the last several decades. A favorite amongst the industry, the original Hanwei factory suffered from a fire and ownership changes. In 2025, the factory closed and original collaborator Frenchie Jin’s forge (Dragon King / Kingston Arms) has taken over, improving and reintroducing past models. The reinvented Hanwei focuses primarily on Japanese and Chinese models, including the Performance Series Katana. Many of the original European models are now adopted as part of the Kingston Arms line.
Often paired together
This sword is an absolute beast at cutting, and holds edge very well after. The tsuba is one of the most beautiful I’ve seen. Not a nimble katana, but not clunky either since the sword geometry is designed to cut tatami mats. The only issue with mine is the scabbard is loose, but it can be easily fixed with a thin piece of wood veneer or a small dab of original gorilla glue around the edge.
I received this one today. As usual KOA packaging was excellent! Great service! As for the sword,, once i pick up my jaw off the floor and put my eyes back in my head,, This one is very beautiful. See other review where the saya/scabbard was loose. So far this one doesn’t rattle.
