This gorgeous and finely crafted Rondel dagger takes its styling from late Medieval and early Renaissance examples and the Rondels have an impressive bi-metallic design with discs of steel which are overlaid in filigree and scrollwork design piercework of intricate and contrasting brass. It may be a handsome piece in its own right, but it is also toughly constructed and eminently functional with a stiff and thick blade of tempered high carbon steel. In the 15th or 16th century a piece such as this would certainly distinguish its bearer as a personage of status or means and unlike simpler Rondel designs bearing this one at the faire, reenactment or event likewise makes one stand out. It is attractively priced and a great way to pad out one’s collection or ensemble with a dagger that punches above its price point in appearance and craftsmanship.

The lengthy dagger blade is just over 10 inches and length and long enough to make it a piece that could be used for war and campaign, but it is short enough that it is not uncomfortable for everyday wear for self defense when in town or on the road. The blade is quite thick and rigid with a reinforcing triangular cross section to the blade which allows for it to be used for leverage and control in close quarters grappling. Its a design that could easily pierce layers of thick clothing or forcing its way into the weak points of an armored harness and breaking apart links of maile. Its 3 5/8 inch grip is of carved wood that has been masterfully carved into a spiraled design. The companion sheath to the dagger is made from thick and genuine vegetable tanned leather of quality with a stitched construction and a brass chape and locket.

Late medieval Italian rondel daggers were specialized thrusting weapons widely carried throughout the 14th and 15th centuries by soldiers, knights, and civilians alike. Distinguished by their circular or disk-shaped guard and pommel, these daggers featured stiff, narrow blades optimized for penetrating gaps in armor and exploiting weaknesses in an opponent’s defenses. Italian examples often displayed elegant proportions and refined craftsmanship, reflecting the advanced metalworking traditions of the city-states of northern Italy. Equally useful as battlefield sidearms and personal-defense weapons, rondel daggers became an essential companion to the sword, serving both practical martial purposes and as symbols of status among the warrior classes of late medieval Europe.
