The Petersen Type C Viking axe was developed during the 7th century and eventually came to the Nordic countries through Western and Central Europe; Several examples of this type have been found in
Sweden and Norway. Our Filunger, a type C bearded axe based on an 11th century find from Gotland Sweden, is primarily a robust and strong tool for woodworking built for real and repetitive use like its historical originals. It’s weighted head and wedge-like shape make it ideal for easily felling and splitting timbers and removing material from a work piece. Historically, axes of this type would have been used to make and smooth the planks used to construct buildings and build boats.
