The Military Service No. 1 Khukuri by Ex-Gurkha Khukuri House is constructed with a blade of 5160 high carbon steel that has been differentially hardened. The blade has a hard edge that resists dulling of 54-55 HRC, it has a body hardness of 45-46 HRC and a softer, shock-absorbing spine hardness of 22-25 HRC.

The bolster and pommel are of brass and the grip is of polished, carved water buffalo horn. It has a scabbard consisting of carved halves of pinewood fitted together with traditional Nepalese Laha glue and finished with a tight outer layer of black layer. It has a pair of leather belt loops and is fitted with a brass tip cover. It has two fitted compartments for the pair of small knives that traditionally accompany the Kukri – the Karda and Chakmak The Karda is a small cutting knife traditionally used to dress small game, and the Chakmak is a tool used to help sharpen a Khukri. The small knives are of high carbon steel and the grips are of polished water buffalo horn.

Gurkha troops are issued two Khukuris; the Service No. 1 and the Service No. 2. The service No.1 is intended to be the Gurkha ceremonial blade, it is a simple, elegant and traditional design. It is by no means a decorative only blade though – it is just the blade that the Gurkhas keep in perfect dress condition. It is a good blade that is representative of both the Gurkhas and of the Khukuri itself.

1 review for Military Service No. 1 Gurkha Khukuri – 9 1/2” Blade

    1. Christopher Buntin (verified owner)

Insanely good for the price, the blade is super thick with good edge geometry. I found that getting a decent edge with the provided Chakmak worked well and was easy enough. The handle is comfortable and the overall balance makes this Khukuri a brutal cutter and a strong tool. Although the thickness of the spine excludes more delicate cutting, it is invaluable when chopping thicker branches and undergrowth and given the differential hardening I am grateful for it. I will say that the finish is a little rough around the edges but absolutely does not compromise the functionality in anyway, and honestly provides a bit of character. These imperfections are more tool marks than actual blemishes and should not discourage anyone from picking one up.
